SESSIONS

NEW: Dedicated paddle analytics. When the wind drops, grab a paddle.

When the wind drops, grab a paddle. KnotNow now treats SUP and kayak as their own sessions, in the same logbook as foiling and sailing.

Not every day is 25 knots. Flatwater intervals on a SUP, a downwind on a surfski, or distance in a kayak still belong in the log. A surfski is logged as kayak. There isn’t a separate surfski type.

Paddle session: stroke rate, distance per stroke, SWOLF and pace

What a GPS average does not show

Average speed does not say whether a fast split came from cadence, a longer glide, or a helpful tide. On a SUP or kayak session KnotNow can show:

  • Stroke rate (SPM). Cadence along the track — cruise versus a harder effort.
  • Distance per stroke. How far each stroke carries you.
  • SWOLF. Time and strokes over a set distance. A lower number is the more efficient one.
  • Pace. Splits along the session, so tide, wind, and fatigue show up in the line.

Pace and distance come from the GPS on any SUP or kayak track. Stroke rate, distance per stroke, and SWOLF appear only when the file includes stroke rate. A GPS-only recording — the KnotNow phone app, Apple Watch app, or Garmin sailing app — does not invent strokes. Those still give you the track, the time, and the pace.

One logbook

Wing foil on a windy day, SUP when it is glassy. Same account, same history.

  • Record in KnotNow. iPhone, Android, Apple Watch, or Garmin. That is a GPS session. Mark it SUP or kayak.
  • Bring a watch paddle activity in. Strava keeps stroke rate when the activity has it, and new water sessions — including SUP and kayak — are picked up after you link. Land sports stay out. Suunto, COROS, and Polar connect in account settings; sync the watch with that brand, then tap Import Workouts. Those imports bring the GPS track and heart rate. For stroke rate from the watch, upload the GPX or TCX.
  • A file you already have. FIT, GPX, or TCX on the web, up to 10 MB. GPX and TCX keep stroke rate when the watch wrote it.
