Turn telemetry
The anatomy of a clean turn.
Open any manoeuvre to see the exact path you carved, paired with the numbers that decided whether it worked.
- Exit percent See how much of your pre-turn pace you had back five seconds later.
- Speed in, slowest point, speed out Your entry speed, the apex dip, and your pace as you powered into the new leg.
- Dual recovery metrics The exact seconds needed to regain 90% of your pre-turn speed, plus the seconds to hit 90% of your new cruising pace. No vague averages.
- Metres lost Quantify what the turn cost your line in metres lost downwind, alongside the precise angle you turned through.
- Did you stay up, or stall out? Every turn outcome labelled in plain waterman terms: whether you held it On foil or On plane, suffered a Splashdown or came Off plane, or had a full-blown Crash.
Session summaries tally total tacks and gybes, successful flying gybes, splashdowns, and wipeouts. Track your gybe foil percentage across the season in the logbook to see technique settle in.
Port vs starboard
The weak side, without the excuses.
Almost everyone has a favourite side and a story about why the other side isn't clicking. KnotNow tags every turn as port or starboard, turning a vague hunch into an honest list.
- Exit speed each side Compare how cleanly you accelerate out of a turn on your natural side versus your unnatural side.
- Smoothness by tack A single, measurable score you can watch climb week over week as your footwork smooths out.
- Splashdown or foiling? See whether your crashes cluster on your heelside carves or your toeside switches.
Tap any turn in the list to inspect the path, review your entry arc, and see where the speed drained away.
Questions
What does a tack or gybe score out of 100 mean?
Every tack and gybe receives an objective score out of 100 based on speed retention, path efficiency, and carving continuity, with Excellent as the top rating. The app also generates a Smoothness score so you can trend your consistency over weeks in the logbook.
How do you measure speed out of a gybe?
Exit percent measures how much of your entry speed you regained five seconds after completing the turn. Beside it, you will see your speed into the turn, the slowest speed at the apex, and your immediate speed out on the new tack.
What does KnotNow show when a turn does not stay up?
The app speaks your sport's language. Foiling sessions log turns as On foil, Splashdown, or Crashed. Planing windsurf and sailing sessions use On plane, Off plane, or Crash. Your session dashboard tracks the exact counts for each.
Can I compare port and starboard gybes?
Yes. Every manoeuvre is tagged port or starboard. You can compare exit pace, recovery seconds, and smoothness scores across both tacks, or open any individual turn to view its path on the map from entry to exit.
