How to read KnotNow forecast ratings

What the colour ratings mean, how tide windows work, and why your spot may differ from the nearest town forecast.

KnotNow ratings answer: is this hour worth rigging for? — not just how windy it is.

Wind direction

Each spot has valid directions (e.g. cross-onshore for your launch). Off-direction wind may show strong speed but a low rating — watch the DIR row on the hourly grid and how it lines up with the compass at the top of the spot page.

Tide

Many locations prefer high or low tide within a window. The forecast highlights hours inside that window.

Water quality

Where we have live overflow data, recent discharges can affect the rating. Check the water-quality panel on the spot page.

Common questions

What do the colours on a KnotNow forecast mean?

Ratings run from poor (grey/red) to excellent (green). They combine wind direction valid for your spot, speed in your usable range, tide window, and where available water-quality risk — not wind speed alone.
