Isle of Wight’s 26,000-Hour Sewage Nightmare

For anyone who sails, wings or foils around the South Coast, the coastal impact of raw sewage discharges is far from theoretical. During the 14 September Commons debate, Richard Quigley, MP for Isle of Wight West, delivered a furious breakdown of what private operators are dumping into the Solent.

Highlighting the threat to the island’s UNESCO biosphere-designated coastline, Quigley revealed staggering local figures:

  • 14,902 hours of raw sewage dumped in his constituency alone since the 2024 election.
  • 26,682 total hours of raw effluent pumped directly into the surrounding coastal waters of the Isle of Wight as a whole.

Private operators have blown their chance on performance, investment, and public trust.

— Richard Quigley MP, Isle of Wight West

When an island community renowned for world-class watersports faces over 26,000 hours of continuous pollution, relying on blind trust before rigging up is simply no longer an option. The Solent, the Needles and the south-coast launch spots are not an abstract catchment on a spreadsheet. They are where people put a foil in, a wing up, or a boat off a trolley.
