Lee-on-the-Solent Winging Guide

Winging, Sailing & Windsurfing Forecast

Loading forecast data...

A classic Hampshire beach that offers clean wind and deep water. It is a popular alternative to Hill Head, often feeling slightly less congested.

The long promenade makes for easy rigging, and the water stays deep close to the shore, which is a major plus for foilers. Lee is a "workhorse" spot for Hampshire wingers. It is particularly good for "downwinders" toward Calshot. For beginners, the beach is fairly steep, so you get into deep water quickly. Advanced foilers often launch from the lower beach car park and head straight into the main channel bumps.

Negatives & Hazards

Things to watch

Fast Tidal Streams. Submerged Groynes. Shipping Traffic.

Very fast tidal streams (up to 4 knots) require careful navigation - the current can be surprisingly strong. Submerged groynes at high tide can be hazards, so be aware of their locations. Shipping traffic in the main channel requires constant awareness - always give way to large vessels. It is particularly good for "downwinders" toward Calshot, but requires experience with tidal streams.
