a classic South Coast venue located right next to Christchurch Harbour.
It is an intermediate-to-advanced spot that works exceptionally well in a West-South-Westerly. The sandbanks just offshore move constantly, creating a variety of wave conditions that can range from fun "slalom" chop to logo-high waves in a big storm. It is a great alternative when the wind is a little too offshore for the harbour inside. For wingers, the "double high tide" of the Solent provides a long window of deep water, and the sandy bottom is much kinder to foils than the shingle found further east.
WSW, SW, S (SW is the "gold standard" for this bay)
15-22 knots for stable flight and small swell; 25 knots + for advanced wave riding with 3m or smaller wings.
Best from mid-to-high tide (at low tide, sandbanks can "suck dry" creating shallow patches)

Overall
Works exceptionally well in WSW winds. A reliable spot that provides a great alternative when the harbour is offshore.
Vibe & Crowds
Vibrant and busy. A focal point for the local community with a high-energy vibe on the water. Very social parking and rigging areas. High. A very popular spot, especially during the season. Can be a hive of activity whenever a gale is forecast.
Suitable For
The shore break and currents near the harbour entrance require a bit of sea-sense to handle safely.
Negatives & Hazards
Strong Tidal Currents. Shifting Sandbanks.
Strong tidal currents running parallel to the beach require awareness and skill. The sandbanks can be shallow and shifting - always check conditions and be aware of changing depths. At low tide, the sandbanks can "suck dry," creating very shallow patches.
Avon Beach
Open in Google MapsLarge pay-and-display car park right next to the beach. Very easy access. The beach is located right next to Christchurch Harbour, making it a convenient alternative to harbour spots.
Sandy bottom (much kinder to foils than shingle found further east). The sandbanks just offshore move constantly, creating a variety of wave conditions.
Year round - best with WSW or SW winds
